November 12 Meeting - Talking to Clients About Money

The next meeting of the Women Attorneys Network of the South Shore will take place on Wed. Nov 12 from 6 - 8pm at the Sunrise of Weymouth, 43 Schoolhouse Road, Weymouth.

We will be having Kathleen Burns Kingsbury of KBK Connections come to talk to us about money and how we can become more confident in setting fees and talking to clients about money.

October 7 (*note corrected date) - Practice Management Tips and Information

Our guest on October 7th will be Rodney Dowell from the Law Office Management Assistance Program.

The Law Office Management Assistance Program (“LOMAP”) assists Massachusetts attorneys in establishing and institutionalizing professional office practices and procedures to increase their ability to deliver high quality legal services, strengthen client relationships, and enhance their quality of life.   LOMAP provides this assistance through its consulting services, reference materials, educational programs, and referrals.

LOMAP offers fantastic services, and is funded through our bar dues, so you should definitely be taking advantage of Rodney's services.

In addition to providing us with practice management information to make us more productive and profitable, Rodney will also be able to talk to us about safeguarding client funds in the face of bank failures. 

This will be a great program!

September 9th Meeting - When DSS Is Involved In Your Clients' Lives

The September Meeting of the Women Attorneys Network of the South Shore will be held on Tuesday Sept. 9 at the Allerton House in Weymouth, at 6pm.

Stacey Eachus of the Massachusetts Family Law Group will be speaking about what you need to know when DSS gets involved in your clients' lives.

Next Meeting - July 16th, Siros at Marina Bay, Quincy

The next WANSS meeting is scheduled for July 16, 2008 at 7pm at Siros on the Boardwalk in Marina  Bay in Quincy. 

We will meet in the outside bar area at  Siros on the Boardwalk.  If we decide at that time to order appetizers/dinner, we can do so, but no one will be tied to a start and end time.  Since there would be a room charge to get a designated area specifically set aside for our group, we have decided to meet generally in the outside bar area.  If anyone feels this is not structured enough and that it would be better to have a seated dinner, please let me know and I book us a table.  Likewise, if anyone wants the gathering to be conducted in a specially set-aside area, let me know, we can charge a fee to our members and pay the room charge.

Our formal meetings are on hold for the summer, but there are several events with other groups that you'll find some of our members at.

Wednesday June 11 - Allerton House in Hingham 15 Condito Road. 6 - 8pm. The Downtown Women's Club is hosting Cocktails and Conversations. Be sure to sign up for their newsletter to be notified of the July and August events. 

Tuesday June 17 - Siros Restaurant at Marina Bay in Quincy.  6 - 8pm. The BostoNetwork is hosting a cocktail hour. RSVP to Ali Wannop at awannop @ cmpolaw.com

May Meeting & Upcoming Events

Our May Meeting is fast approaching. It will be on Wednesday May 7 at 6 p.m. at the boutique clothing store Lyn Evans for Potpourri Designs in Hanover.  It's located in Merchant's Row at 2053 Washington St. Hanover.  Our guests will be Image Specialist Lori Johnson of Your Best Image, and photographer Gretje Ferguson.  They will be talking to us about dressing for different events - Court, going from client meetings to after hours events, and if you are going to be on television or in the newspaper (like those of our members who came to the self-defense class last week.)

Former WANSS guest speakers Kathleen Burns Kingsbury and Stacey Shipman are holding a retreat in Vermont in June on the connection between your mind, body, confidence levels and a successful career/business. There will be yoga, hiking, and workshops on money and business.  Check out the details here.

Also, if you haven't been to a Downtown Women's Club event yet, you don't know what you are missing. They have great events on the South Shore and in Boston. Their next South Shore event is on May 29 at Marina Bay in Quincy.

April 2 - Self Defense Training

Join us on Wednesday, April 2 at 6 p.m. for a Self-Defense Training.  Susan Chopourian will be our instructor.  She holds three black belts, is a former national competitor in fighting and form, formerly co-owned a martial arts school, and has a background in dance and fitness in addition to the marital arts.  She is currently general manager of Boston Sports Club - Weymouth.  She will present techniques to us to use for our protection and will bring equipment with her to let us practice our moves.  Wear comfortable clothing!

To be held at: 160 Old Derby St. in Hingham, right off exit 15. It's the large brick building with the green sign "The Lincoln Building." Enter through the front door, and the meeting will be in the basement.

We will have some snacks on hand.

The fee for the evening is $10, to pay our instructor, please bring cash.

You can wear comfy clothes if you have them, but don't let your outfit stop you from attending - you never know what you'll be wearing when you need to protect yourself!

March 5 - Family Law Panel

The Wednesday March 5th Meeting of the Women Attorneys Network of the South Shore will be held at the Allerton House in Weymouth at 43 Schoolhouse Road, from 6-8pm, with dinner being served.  Networking and arrivals from 6 - 6:30, and the speakers will begin at 6:30. 

This month's program will focus in on the different types of law that intersect with Family Law:

• when your client is served with a restraining order or is being threatened
• what it means for the divorce proceedings if one or both parties are nearing bankruptcy
• how to effectively work with a GAL
• estate planning issues in divorce
• divorce and Medicaid or Special Needs.

Whether you are a family law attorney, or practice in an area that touches family law, you will be sure to benefit from this lively and informative panel discussion.

Panelists are: Lee Darst, Gail Otis, Leanna Hamill, Alexis Levitt , and the discussion will be moderated by Plymouth County Judicial Assistant Cindy Gates.

We will have a brief presentation by Irwin Abrams, owner of Kwik Kopy in Norwell on how to effectively use print pieces in marketing.  Come with your marketing plans for 2008, and come with questions and the group will help you brainstorm.  We can set up Accountability Teams for members who would like the added motivation of reporting in to someone on progress towards meeting goals.

Tuesday February 5th
6:00 at the Make and Take Kitchen in Norwell
